Who We Are
Vikas Deepti means “Promoting light” came into existence in 1995 under the bold leadership of Fr. John Maliekal, a seasoned and experienced social activist and a committed father. From its humble beginning it has brought light, life and love into the lives of hundreds of persons with disabilities and thousands of children with disabilities and brought back a smile on their faces.
PARTNERING WITH WORLD TO SHARE AND CARE FOR THE DIFFERENTLY ABLED CHILDREN AND THE SOCIALLY MARGINALISED
Vikas Deepti is a registered charitable society and Vikas Bhavan is its office. From Vikas Bhavan rehabilitation activities are monitored.
Bargarh, one of the least developed district that has a population of 1, 34 millions residing in 1180 villages. There are 42,135 physically challenged persons residing in Bargarh District which is 3.31% to its total population. The district has segmented to 12 Blocks and 248 Gram panchayats having geographical area of 5837 Sq.K Ms and a population density of 231 per square K Ms. The annual rainfall of the area is 1527 mm per year, ill distributed and erratic monsoon leading to low crop yields and poverty. Severe drought occurs occasionally in a cycle of five years. In this district nearly 82% of the people live in villages. Of this rural population nearly 80% are marginalized farmers and 15-20% is landless agricultural laborers. Most of the villages even the block headquarters have little access to public transport resulting in a lack of NGO and government development activities and services.
Our Approach
Major Programs
Vikas Deepti has following programs with goals to implement for achieving its vision and mission:

Major Activities
- Spread the rehabilitation programmes in and around Bargarh by providing the facilities of corrective surgery, postoperative care, physiotherapy, prosthetic and orthotic appliances, and other mobility or rehabilitation aid.
- Create awareness among the public about disability and how to overcome or minimize the same.
- Promote awareness of the need for and benefit of mobility aid and appliances for people with disabilities. These mobility aids and appliances include a wheelchair, tricycle, crutches, callipers, artificial limb etc.
- Promote vocational training and career guidance to make the physically challenged self-dependent.
- Self-employment/ Income generation programme for the grown-up disabled.
- Help the physically challenged children at least for primary education.
- Provide support to poor children with disabilities for higher education.
- Provide multi-drug therapy for leper patients.
- Create awareness about leprosy that it is not a curse but it is an illness like any other sickness, which can be cured
- Provide education for the children of lepers.

Besides these organisations, there are several individual persons and families who through their financial contributions have been helping Vikas Deepti in carrying out its noble work for the benefit of children and persons with disability in the district of Bargarh.
