Community Based Rehabilitation
Vikas Deepti - Promoting Life and Light

Community Based Rehabilitation-CBR
The CBR programmes began in the villages in 2005 due to the number of PWD’s and CWD’s not being attended owing to obvious reasons for shortage of accommodation & crunch of funds at VikasDeepti. However, putting all the needy into IBR at VikasDeepti was impossible. Hence two blocks of Bargarh- Bheden Block consisting of 46 GPs (Gram Panchayats) were covered. In the year 2012 Barpali was added and in 2014 some GPs of Attabira are added.
Our Approach
-

CBR: Special SchoolsThe purpose of the special schools is to prepare the CP (Cerebral Palsy) and MR (Mentally Retarded) children for the formal schools. At the moment we have 90 such children who are in special schools. All the children are freely given uniforms, bags, toys, and chart posters…etc. They are looked after by special teachers, who are trained for this noble endeavour. The Joyful Learning Methods are used extensively for creating interest and enthusiasm in children to join the formal schools. They are taught elementary things like parts of the body, names of fruits, vegetables, colours, birds, animals…etc so as to distinguish pictures from the real objects. The Village Education Committee (VEC) is formed to monitor the regularity of the children, involvement of the parents and maintenance of the schools. The nutrition provided by Vikas Deepti is also supervised by the VEC.

CBR: SHG’sSelf Help Group is one of the means of proving one’s ability to excel in one’s life. We have formed 128 SHGs for the PWDs (Persons with Disability) in the last 8 years. A group of 5 to 7 members form a group and get themselves involved in Vocational Trades, petty businesses like grocery, betel shop, mat- making, TV and cycle repairs, tailoring and embroidery etc. Availing bank loans has made them independent and has improved their assets in society. Their family members who once weighed them as burden have altered their thinking. Thanks largely to SHGs.

CBR: ADL/ Home-Based TherapyThe children who are unable to attend the special schools due to their severe disabilities are taught through toys, play materials, pictures, cards, etc. The parents/ guardians of the CWD (Children with Disability) are made part of this teaching with the idea of continuation even in the absence of the CBR workers. It is astonishing to see that due to these interventions some children have been enrolled in formal schools.

CBR : AdvocacyFormation of block-level networking committees in different blocks is great support for the PWDs. The block-level workshops on disability rights and several skill-building training on various issues have made the PWDs get themselves acquainted with the Government, BDO, Block Chairman, Sarpanch, DSW, teachers, Anganwadi workers and NGOs. Creating awareness with the help of the public persons has benefited them substantially to avail Government facilities and provisions for the physically challenged.

CBR : Health AwarenessWe conduct Gram Panchayat level health awareness meetings, camps for women, adolescent girls and children with disabilities time to time for their well being. The results have been good as they bring in awareness and prevention efforts are being aimed at. Our CBR workers have built good relationships with ANM, Asha Karmi, and Anganwadi teachers, who already have good rapport with the general public. Due to this approach it has become almost a joint venture with the public and more women and children have become part of the immunization programme.

CBR : NetworkingFormation of block-level networking committees is a great support to the PWDs of the project area. For the moment we have three networks that are able to take responsibilities to some extent. The capacity building training has helped them to help themselves. We hope to make them the future of these involvements in our project areas. The training for them in Leadership, RTI and management seems to have helped them and a great deal of involvement is expected in the coming days.
