Leprosy Care

Leprosy eradication and the care of the children through the rehabilitation is the programme Vikas Deepti has chosen for the persons affected with leprosy around Bargarh. In the last 18 years it has provided houses, medicines, schooling, nutrition, and self-sufficiency programmes to almost 500 inmates in four colonies.

Our Approach

  • Leprosy: Housing

    When the leprosy patients were in great number the temporary mud-sheds were indeed a real problem. Due to the generous donations of our benefactors, we have been able to build them 100 good houses and made available sanitation and water facilities in their colonies.

  • Leprosy: Education

    The children of the leprosy patients are perfectly fit to lead a normal life with all the capabilities. Hence, they are given attention through education to be part of society. Because of the stigma, they are unable to enrol themselves in public schools and so we provide them hostel and they are given education in the schools and hostel. They are offered books and notebooks, stationeries and uniforms and nutrition freely in order to make them feel one with the rest.

  • Leprosy: Health

    Weekly-run clinic in all the colonies takes care of their health necessities. Two Paramedical staff are engaged in dressing the wounds and taking care of hygiene. On a monthly basis pension is granted to the patients who are unable to sustain themselves. In emergency and severe sicknesses, they are given treatment in the hospitals.

  • Leprosy: Self-Sufficiency

    In order to support their living a certain amount of land with irrigation facilities is made available where they produce seasonal crops, vegetables, pulses etc. This gives them dignity and will to live. Self-sufficiency programs like rickshaws, training in driving, cultivation, fishery etc make them compete with the general section of the society.
